Now that you've taken the first step in rebuilding your credit, let's gather together the papers you'll need to bring with you. If you do not have all the paperwork, then you probably will not be able to take your vehicle home with you.
Use the handy checklist below to keep track of the information you will bring.
Verification of Employment/Income
W2: Pay Stub showing taxes taken out:
- Find your most recent pay stub. You must bring one pay stub for each job you put on the application. Each stub must be from the last 30 days; in other words, no pay stub can be more than 30 days old.
No W2: Self- employed; contract workers; all 1099 employees:
- Two consecutive months of bank statements showing deposits from your job. The bank statements should be the two most recent months, be in your name and contain your name and current address.
- If you cannot show two months of bank deposits, then you will need to bring two months of cancelled checks from your employer. Again, you will need to get the two most recent months.
Fixed Income:
- Social Security benefits: a copy of your award letter or check OR dDirect deposits on a bank statement or printout.
- Child Support / Alimony: payment history in the form of a court/state agency record, cancelled checks, or direct deposits showing the frequency and consistency of the payments.
- Retirement/Pension/Annuity: bank statements showing direct deposits, cancelled checks, award letter or yearly COLA letter.
- If any of the payments are paid directly to a debit card, you may bring the statement showing the direct deposits.
- All documents MUST be the most current available.
Residence Information
Proof of Residence, Utilities in My Name:
To qualify: 1) the bill must be in your name; 2) be mailed to your address; and, 3) must show your address. All documents must be from the last 30 days. Bring one or more from the list below:
- Gas/Electric bill; cannot be final notice or show service disconnected.
- Water bill; cannot be final notice or show service disconnected.
- Cable bill; cannot be final notice or show service disconnected.
- Phone bill; cannot be final notice or show service disconnected.
- Mortgage statement.
- If you have moved to your residence in the last two months, then a hookup/connection notice is OK along with a copy of the complete lease/rental agreement.
Proof of Residence, Utilities Not In My Name:
If the utilities are not in your name - for example if you live with a relative - then the issue is a little more complicated. Here are some documents that will help:
- Cable bill; cannot be final notice or show service disconnected.
- Phone bill: in your name at your address and cannot be a final notice or show service disconnected.
- Bank statments in your name mailed to your address.
- Official mail from federal or state agencies; however, tax returns are NOT acceptable.
- Several pieces of junk mail from the last 30 days.
It is best if you can bring a few from each category. So, you may have a bank statement, a letter from a court regarding child support and three pieces of junk mail. The more, the better.
- Things that are NOT acceptable for residence:
- Insurance bills
- Final bills / Disconnect Notices.
- Online bank printouts/in-branch statements.
- Promotional mail (unless we tell you to bring it)
- Pay stubs.
- Documents sent to PO Box without listing your physical address
- Documents with blacked out information
